Discovery Channel celebrates 20 years of broadcasting in Russia

Discovery Channel, the flagship educational and entertainment channel owned by Media Alliance, is celebrating 20 years of broadcasting in Russia. Discovery Channel was first broadcast in Russia in April 1998. Since its launch on the Russian market, it has become a pioneer and a trendsetter in many areas of pay TV: constant investments in content, a high level of expertise, and new program genres and formats helped the channel to its leading spot. Discovery Channel was the first channel on thematic TV to start selling advertisements. Today, as it did 20 years ago, Discovery Channel sets trends and remains one of the leading players in the industry, reaching, on average, 15 million viewers per month.

The anniversary year is marked with interesting projects, partnerships, and initiatives: Discovery Channel established a nomination as part of the Festival of Young Journalists and awarded talented young specialists in this field. Discovery Channel held a prize draw competition for pay TV operators to thank them for their collaboration. Partnerships are also planned with the Polytech Festival of Science, Art & Technology. In addition, under the partnership with the Contemporary Science Film Festival, Discovery Channel will present educational documentary programs in universities throughout Russia. During the e anniversary year there will be other events to mark 20 years of broadcasts in Russia.

The channel will be broadcasting long-awaited new seasons of cult shows: Destroyers of Legends, American Chopper, and Machinators, as well as The Island with Bear Grylls and How the Universe Works. And of course, viewers will see exciting new projects – Viruses, The Last Ninja, Dangerous Work, and many others.

The efforts of the Discovery Channel to help viewers make discoveries has repeatedly been highly praised by experts – the channel has received many prestigious Big Digit and Golden Ray industry awards, winning the votes of both professional juries and audiences.
